No matter how you are celebrating Earth Day 2022, signing the Plant Based Treaty can be one of your simple climate actions that will go a long way. Here’s how you can make Earth Day part of your everyday life.
Three Earth Day Actions to Save the Planet:
1. Fight climate change with diet change.
A meat-heavy diet contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, excessive water use, soil degradation, ocean acidification, deforestation, and species extinction. By choosing to eat seasonal, locally grown plant-based foods, you can drastically lower your impact on the planet.
Based on a comparative assessment of the current Beyond Burger production system, the Beyond Burger (a plant-based alternative that mimics the taste of meat) generates “90% less greenhouse gas emissions, requires 46% less energy, has >99% less impact on water scarcity and 93% less impact on land use than a ¼ pound of U.S. beef.”
Try to make your next meal plant-based! When comparing dietary choices with reference to greenhouse gas emissions, veganism outperforms vegetarianism and an omnivore diet. According to a University of Oxford study, a single glass of dairy milk results in almost three times the greenhouse gas emissions of any plant-based milk.
2. Think globally, act locally.
Learning about how our food choices affect the climate crisis can be one of the first steps towards creating change. Gather your friends around to watch a powerful film such as Eating Our Way to Extinction or Seaspiracy and make a plant-based meal together.
This year’s Earth Day 2022 theme is #InvestInOurPlanet. We are asking businesses to invest in plant-based foods and for governments to invest in a plant-based, green economy. Through bottom up public pressure, the Plant Based Treaty calls for a change in taxes, subsidies and public information campaigns so that it favors plant-based foods over byproducts of animal agriculture. Investing in vegan businesses through green bonds makes it easier for vegan businesses to set up and thrive.
3. Amplify your voice. Sign the Plant Based Treaty.
Take climate action by signing the Plant Based Treaty over here. Just fill out your details to join the growing numbers calling for national governments to negotiate and implement a global treaty. It has 3 Rs. R1: Relinquish halts the expansion of animal agriculture, R2 Redirect our investments towards plant based food systems and R3 Restore key ecosystems.

Make every day Earth Day by adopting and spreading a plant-based diet. It’s the single most effective individual action someone can take to lower their carbon footprint. Further, taking action in your community can help drive policy change to make vegan foods accessible to all while saving the Planet.
