In Richmond, Virginia, settled within the rich array of trendy, new-wave eateries catering to the students of nearby Virginia Commonwealth University, you will find a game-changing restaurant for the plant-based soul food lover. As someone whose family was raised associating celebrations and barbecues with fried meats and greasy fare, every time I see a vegan soul food eatery, I see an opportunity to introduce them to a more positive way to celebrate.
The food at NuVegan is familiar comfort food with a healthy vegan twist that only makes me more excited to introduce it to those who never previously conceived of a world in which joyful gatherings can be separate from the lethargic feeling that animal-based food products give you.
NuVegan believes in a future where the food we eat to enjoy family vacations wasn’t also the same food that led us to clogged arteries and diabetic kits in later years.

Aside from the cultural importance of plant-based comfort food, the great taste makes an excellent case, too. During this particular visit to the Richmond location of NuVegan, I had an extremely juicy and well-made vegan chicken sandwich–a sandwich that made me question the arbitrary lines our society draws between ‘vegan culture’ and ‘meat culture’.
The NuVegan faux-chicken sandwich tastes so similar to real chicken meat that the distinction between ‘real’ meat and fake meat that meat-eaters make became useless. But instead of asking my family questions like ‘Why seek real meat when the plant alternative tastes the same?’, I simply recommend a plant-based soul food eatery and let the happiness and comfort the tasty food creates speak for itself.

Both the Richmond and D.C. locations of NuVegan are a treat to visit and their mastery of plant-based comfort foods has barely been matched. The significance of vegan soul food’s existence is enough to make me recommend this chain to anyone who enjoys a great taste and a great experience.
