It’s the 4th Annual Hemp History Week! June 3rd-9th, 2013
Hemp has been on the “IN” list for years. It’s one of the most well known “superfoods”. But for some reason I did not get on the hemp train until this year. Sure, I’ve had it in smoothies and dressings at restaurants, but didn’t start using it on the regular in my own kitchen until a few months ago. Crazy right?!
My two favorite ways to use this amazing seed that has a full range of amino acids, tons of protein per tablespoon, and Omega 3’s and 6’s is for smoothies and dressings. They taste good sprinkled on just about anything, but there’s something about blending it up that creates a smooth consistency you want in both a smoothie and a dressing.
Today I share with you two of my favorite recipes using hemp seeds. Enjoy!
Hemp Cherry Bomb Smoothie
Makes one 16-ounce smoothie
A smoothie with superfoods and broccoli that actually tastes good? You betcha! It’s essential that you use frozen bananas and frozen broccoli to get the smooth, creamy texture without tasting the broccoli.
1 cup unsweetened non-dairy milk
1/2 frozen banana
1/2 cup frozen cherries
1/3 cup frozen broccoli
1 scoop protein powder (optional)
2 tablespoons hemp seeds
Dash cinnamon
Directions:
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth and no chunks remain. Serve immediately.
Ginger-Miso Dressing
Makes about 1 cup
This tasty Asian-inspired dressing will become a staple in your kitchen—guaranteed! I love serving it over a salad or a grain, beans, and greens bowl pictured above!
4-6 dates, soaked in 1/2 cup boiled water for 10 minutes
1/4 cup hemp seeds
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
1 tablespoon white miso
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Directions:
Place all ingredients, including date soaking water, into a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Add more water as needed to get your desired consistency. Refrigerate up to one week.

June 6, 2013 at 8:56 pmDidn’t even know it was hemp week… We always have hemp seed in our fridge. Use it as sprinkle on salads, steamed veggies, and in wraps. My husband adds hemp powder in his fruit smoothies. Great stuff.
