March has arrived and spring is on it’s way. It’s the time of year when things are blooming, rebirth is afoot, and new energy can be found to make healthier choices in your diet and lifestyle. It’s a great time for cleansing both your mind and your body. You may feel new energy sprouting up around you, a new pep in your step, and a clearing out of the old. It’s a new start so seize the opportunity to make some simple changes in your life. Here are a few easy things you can do to set you on a path of health and happiness this spring.
Cook it Yourself
Making your own meals and staying away from fast food is a no-brainer on staying healthy. Grab some new cookbooks and commit to trying 3 new recipes per week. Do batch cooking on your day off, where you make a big pot of beans to eat throughout the week, a soup which you can freeze, some homemade veggie burgers that can also be frozen, and make a big pot of rice that you can use to make breakfast porridge and sushi rolls for lunch. Find crafty ways to use leftovers and prep things ahead of time so you always have something to whip up when you get home from work.
Keep it Local, Keep it Seasonal
For the health of the planet and to keep your body in balance with your surrounding environment, it’s best to eat as much local, organic, seasonally grown produce as possible. The grocery stores of today are seasonless, so take a trip to your local farmer’s market to find what is available near you. The produce at the FM will be the freshest and tastiest it can be since it was just picked that morning.
Do a Cleanse
Springtime is the perfect time of year to do a cleanse. My favorite one is the 21-Day Detox. You can also find a great cleanse in Kris Carr’s new book Crazy Sexy Diet. Whatever you choose, seek guidance and take it easy. You’ll be removing toxins that have accumulated over time, so you may feel a little crappy during your cleanse. This is normal and if you push through it you’ll feel much clearer, focused, lighter, and happier after.
Keep It Simple
Eating plant-based doesn’t mean need a gourmet cook-a-thon every day, and who has time for such work ? This is a good time to simplify your eating habits. There is nothing bad about a simple meal of beans, steamed greens, and quinoa, or eating a huge all raw salad on it’s own, or just making a smoothie for breakfast.
Raid the Bulk Bins
The bulk bins are your new best friend. They hold all your grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, dried-fruit, and other things you can use for snacks. Buying from bulk bins reduces trash going to the landfill and costs way less per pound that buying it in a package. It’s a win/win!
Here’s some beautiful Spring dishes for you to try this month!
