Phoenix, the 6th largest city in the U.S., has bright sunshine, great desert hiking trails, a large art scene, and now an emerging organic, vegetarian and vegan market.  As a vegan it’s exciting to explore its stand-out restaurants, farmer’s markets, and distinctive meat-free fare.  The four places below are popular ones to visit.

Town and Country Farmer’s Market

2021 East Camelback Road, Phoenix, AZ, 85016

If you plan to make a nutritious vegan or vegetarian meal at home, Phoenix has many great farmers’ markets for buying fresh organic vegetables and fruits.  The Town and Country Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in central Phoenix hosts two separate farms that sell a wide variety of organic produce including kale, red chard, cipollini onions, Peruvian purple potatoes, campari tomatoes, and watermelon radishes.  They also offer Anasazi beans, grown by Native Americans for centuries, and red and black quinoa, both of which add great variety to recipes.

Green New American Vegetarian (Vegan)

2022 North 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ, 85004

2240 N. Scottsdale Rd #8 Tempe, AZ 85281

When you are ready to eat out, Green New American Vegetarian is a good place to start.  This friendly restaurant offers vegan food that is creative and delicious.  The entrees are a mix of Asian inspired noodle and rice bowls and American comfort food.  Green’s specialty is faux meats with flavorful sauces which show up in the appetizers, salads, and the sub style sandwiches called ‘po-boys’.  For a delightful dessert Green makes a thick soft serve vegan ice cream treat called ‘tsoynami’ which many liken to a DQ Blizzard. The interior of the restaurant is spacious and funky decorated with off-beat artwork.  With familiar food and a modern vibe, it’s a popular place for everyone.

The Pomegranate Café (Vegetarian)

4025 East Chandler Blvd., Suite 28, Phoenix, AZ, 85048

The Pomegranate Café, located in Ahwatukee, a southeastern neighborhood of Phoenix, is a wonderful vegetarian café.  Pomegranate Café uses fresh organic ingredients for its delicious salads, wraps, veggie burgers, and sandwiches.  Its signature item is healthy and energizing juices drinks. The antioxidant rich Braveheart juice, for example, combines leafy greens, kale, and cucumber among other ingredients. The owners are trained vegetarian chefs who have put their culinary passion into this bright and cheerful restaurant and have made healthy food taste great!

Fresh Mint (Vegetarian, Vegan)

13802 N Scottsdale Road, Suite 161, Scottsdale, AX 85254

Fresh Mint is a very friendly vegetarian restaurant in Scottsdale which serves Asian classics using fresh ingredients in a Vietnamese style.  Most dishes are vegan and use faux meats such as Kung Pao Soy Chicken and Spicy Ginger Soy Beef.  They also have many noodle dishes such as Pad Thai and a variety of vegetable dishes like Eggplant with Basil.  The interior of the restaurant is bright green and the servers are happy to welcome you.  It’s a fun and relaxing place for anyone who wants to enjoy delicious Asian fare.

Next to the Phoenix location of Green is their vegan bakery Nami. They have fabulous baked goods and serve brunch on Sunday’s from 9-2. I highly recommend it 🙂
