Animal suffering is a multifaceted issue, and there is an urgent need for an integrated and compassionate solution. While a healthy vegan diet reduces the demand for farm animal suffering, we must remember there are many other animals in dire need of assistance. So this afternoon, while HappyCow sits down to a delicious vegetarian meal, our friends at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) will be continuing their lifesaving efforts. We think it’s only fitting to pause for a moment, and share some of the amazing work these caring individuals perform.
The Gift of Life
Throughout the afternoon, one of our colleagues at the RSPCA will be comforting a lovable old dog named Jerry. Although Jerry was treated poorly by his previous caretaker, he still remains a sweet and gentle boy. He has lived at the RSPCA for nearly a year, but Jerry still looks forward to a chance at his own comfy bed, and maybe even a backyard to explore.
Giving Jerry a chance for a new lease on life takes a special commitment from the RSPCA. He needs healthy food, clean water, exercise, and affection in order to thrive. Of course, all these necessities take time and resources. Thankfully we have our kind friends in England and Wales, willing to care for Jerry and see that he winds up in a loving home.
From a Chirp to a Chorus
Often times, wild animals need our help too. Notably, mother birds face a host of dangers perpetrated by humans. Whether they meet their demise by ingesting plastic or becoming entangled in lines, the unsung victims are the baby birds left to languish.
When these babies are orphaned, the RSPCA springs into action by providing round-the-clock care, including warm bedding and nourishing food. Our friends also employ a novel approach to rehabilitation, playing the tiny fledglings audio recordings of a dawn time avian serenade. This allows the baby birds to learn vocalization skills, increasing their survival and mating prospects once released into the wild.
Big Thanks
In the time it takes HappyCow to enjoy our lunch today, countless animals will be saved by our very compassionate friends at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Please join us in thanking them for their hard work and dedication. To support them or find out more information please visit: http://donations.rspca.org.uk/247/online.aspx?seg=11CIN30262

August 12, 2011 at 3:17 pmThanks for telling us about the RSPCA. I find it especially wonderful that they help wildlife. I can speak for the midwestern part of the U.S. and assure you that at least here, there are not enough wildlife rehabilitators to go around. (This is partly b/c it is unpaid work with long hours and partly due to our states’ dysfunctional system for licensing them. The licensing is usually done by state Department of Natural Resources which, in Illinois anyway, we called the Department of Nuts with Rifles. Suffice it to say they are more concerned with making money from killing animals than licensing qualified people to rehabilitate them.)
