BRUSSELS, BELGIUM Tucked away in a calm little street, ideally located next to Place Saint Boniface, Fourchette à Bicyclette is a unique place. This very tiny restaurant is owned by Alexandra Roshardt, a French expat who invites us into her kitchen to discover how healthy cuisine can be both exciting and nourishing. Alexandra has a real passion for culinary art. Her restaurant is where she gives free rein to her imagination, to create original dishes that make gourmet mouths water. Her cuisine is familial but sophisticated, she transforms simple ingredients or day to day recipes into elegant and almost gastronomic preparations. Her cuisine isn’t exclusively for vegans, it is suited for anyone that enjoys eating healthy without compromising on flavour or quality. Quality is one of her strong values; she works with organic products sourced locally for the most part, and prepares everything herself in her open kitchen. She has dedicated her work to creating great lunch and brunch, and never opens at night. I guess she believes in the adage that says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but Alexandra extends it to lunch and brunch! My advice for you is to go there for […]

An Earthworm Podcast – Scott Poynton talks with Swiss biodynamic winemaker Pierre Fonjallaz about his vineyard and winemaking practice on the hills beside Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Pierre talks about the motivations to change his approach, his new 5000 year timeline for sustainability, and his discovery how – as he started implementing biodynamic processes – that he began to learn from the land and the plants about other aspects of life. A more in-depth article about Pierre Fonjallaz – here. Extract – Like the chat in the garden, our discussion in the vineyard was full of life. It was a veritable Garden of Eden up there with flowers, grasses and the vines themselves all flourishing. You got a rich sense of life bursting forth from everywhere. The views over the Lavaux, the lake and to the mountains beyond were stunning backdrops. Pierre was in his element among his vines and I had a job to keep my recorder within earshot as he shared his ideas and experiences. We were able to see and compare Pierre’s neighbours’ vineyards. In most cases, his neighbours were adopting the more traditional approach that sees them napalming the grasses around the vines with herbicide. Nothing grew […]

Hong Kong can be a real nightmare for veg*ans trying to eat in omnivorous eateries. For example Chinese omnivorous places often use chicken stock in food they bill as vegetarian. As per tons of other omnivorous places around the world (as mentioned before in this blog), many HK places to eat have no serious detailed understanding of vegetarian terms and concepts. This is regardless of the ethnicity of the cuisine a restaurant offers. There are though some omnivorous eateries in Hong Kong that appear to target the compassionate / health conscious consumer. Are the following omni places in HK worth considering for the veg*an diner? In writing this article the intention was to try to be constructive and positive. In reality some places made that much easier than others. The listings are in alphabetical order. 1) Anything But Salads (Sheung Wan) – Calista Go and Delon Tuan at ABS are happy to talk at length about vegan, raw, gluten free and the rest. In the time when material for this article was being investigated, Calista and Delon advised that they have previously removed the solitary non-vegetarian item that was in their stock list. They advise ABS is now 100% vegetarian. […]

Wednesday 26 August witnessed the 2015 Hong Kong Top 10 Vegan/Organic Restaurant Awards presented by Happycow.com. Part of Natural and Organic Products Asia 2015 at the cavernous Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre, the ceremony was also supported by Meat Free Hong Kong. All the winning restaurants obviously had in common being geared to the vegan/organic food market. Also as a minimum, all are 100% vegetarian. Within that criteria though the winners are, well, pretty diverse. Eastern and Western, high end and mass market, contemporary and traditional, big and tiny… So here they are…the 10 winning restaurants brought to you by HappyCow & NOPA: *Grassroots Pantry – Boutique cafe serving wholesome, world-inspired dishes. Approx 90% of the menu is vegan suitable. Sources unprocessed local, sustainable and organic ingredients. Having (organically) outgrown their premises in Sai Ying Pun, they are super busy this week before formally opening on 1st September at a bigger/better/stronger/faster location on Hollywood Road. *Greenwoods Raw Cafe – All vegan, organic, and as the name suggests, raw. Contemporary, taste-filled food and peaceful, relaxing decor. Based in Tsim Sha Tsui, they also supply to other restaurants around HK *Light Radiant Food – All vegan, and also popular with organic zealots. A […]

Share the story of a vegan tea farmer who started growing organic tea. Mr. Lin has been vegan for 40 years, and in recent years his principles of compassion toward all living beings have been put into practice. After dropping out of the large-scale commercial tea industry 15 years ago, he returned to his family land to plant a persimmon grove. For years, he attempted to prevent his fruit from being eaten by wild monkeys by fencing and netting in his entire farm. He tried everything short of the more common practice of poisoning the monkeys, which was not an option for him. Mr. Lin and Tea Andy on the new organic oolong tea farm. VIEW CAMPAIGN He decided to re-purpose his farm to grow organic oolong tea because monkeys don’t eat tea leaves, it’s healthier, more sustainable and he has a lifetime of experience with tea. The goal of this campaign is to purchase Mr. Lin’s entire inaugural harvest and make it available exclusively to the backers. We’ll also produce a video documentary on the entire process of developing this new organic farm, from inspection and certification to harvest and processing. Our aim is to send a clear message […]

On a trip several years ago to the Pacific Northwest, a package of Sin Dawg bread caught my eye at a local co-op. I don’t know if it was the long, baguette style shape that caught my eye, or the picture of the cute Dachshund on the wrapper. It was probably the Dachshund, since I’m naturally drawn to anything dog related. In any event, I picked up the loaf and was surprised by its weight. The bread could easily be used as a free weight! That intrigued me even more. And then I noticed that Sin Dawg was made by Dave’s Killer Bread. I was already a fan of Dave’s Killer Bread. All of the ingredients in their breads are organic and non GMO. And with the exception of one bread, all of their breads are vegan! Sin Dawg’s wrapper described the bread as “100% Whole Grain Organic Cinnamon-Sugar Bread Roll”…and I saw that it was packed with seeds, nuts, raisins, cinnamon and molasses. SOLD! Later that day, Hubby and I had a piece for a snack. OMG!!! So tasty and delicious…with a super gooey cinnamon and molasses filling. Way better and healthier than your average cinnamon roll. And, a […]

Suppose that you are vegan and you live in a house with non-vegans. And suppose that these omnivores are your family, your children and/or spouse. Oftentimes families have mixed dietary preferences and approaches. But families still want to eat together—eating together as a family provides communication, an opportunity to listen, eye contact, and of course, time to remember gratitude. It’s good and it feels good to herd everyone together for meals. My “2/7 Guideline” is only a suggestion for how you can eat with your family together. If you think of your meals this way, there are only a couple of things (2) that you’re eating differently—the rest of the meal can still be shared together. Also, planning and preparing foods with the 2/7 Guideline is easier for the chef, which I’m assuming is you 🙂 Plates will be full, you can serve steamy soups and colorful salads in side dish bowls, and everyone will be happy! Bring on the bounty! All suggestions are non-processed, organic of course: 1. Protein (you can always do vegan protein here): You can dress up your lentils with lasagna! Click HERE for a vegan, gluten-free lentil lasagne with cashew cream sauce recipe. 2. Grains: Preferably […]

My Exotic Tropical Organic Green Smoothies are the easiest health solution yet! You can bond with friends and family while blending, and you never know what wonderful health improvements you can expect from adding organic greens to your life! Directions: 1.) Add to a blender the following (high powered blender is best because you really need high power to liquefy the greens): 1 cup organic liquid (organic unpasteurized fruit juice, organic almond milk, organic coconut water—from a real young coconut is tops—water, etc.) 1 handful organic spinach or organic romaine lettuce (get crazy with organic kale later if you want and be certain to de-stem it first) 2.) Blend the liquid and the greens together in high speed blender until really smooth. 3.) Then add the following: 1 organic frozen banana 1 organic medjool date (remove pit) 1/2 cup other organic fruit of choice (let’s say organic berries or organic blueberries) 4.) Pulse with scoop of ice if desired. Enjoy! OPTIONAL: You can add 1-2 tablespoons of raw organic fat—let’s say raw organic almond butter (I would omit this if you’re trying to lose weight) OPTIONAL: Add another 1/2 cup of organic fruit OPTIONAL: Add a scoop of organic vegan protein IDEA: Kale & Avocado. Use coconut […]

Pineapples are full of Vitamin C and manganese, which are good for your bones, among other nutrients! Delicious clean eating! I’m not a big fan of blended or juiced fruit. I give different guidance on this depending on the person and their blood sugar issues. However, if you’re drinking soda, beer, or eating refined sugar, then this is probably a fantastic upgrade! ORGANIC PINEAPPLE EXPRESS Ingredients: 1 sweet organic pineapple* 12 filtered water ice cubes (large-ish) Blender *Taste the pineapple…if it’s average, don’t use it all for one blender. It has to be sweet to make this amazing. I will often save an average pineapple and use 50% of an amazing one and 50% of the average pineapple. Directions: 1. Peel and cut the pineapple. You will need very small pieces if you use a normal blender. If you have a VitaMix, go crazy. 2. Put the pineapple into the blender and blend that first. 3. Once that looks like a smoothie, add the 12 ice cubes and PULSE the blender until the ice is crushed to your liking (I prefer icy chunks) Voila! You will have an icy, amazing pineapple drink. This recipe originally appeared on Michele’s blog here.

Have you heard of Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates? They are an amazing family-run company that produces some unbelievably delicious chocolate—including a GREAT selection of vegan options! The Sjaak’s Story began on the Southern beaches of Spain. This is where Jacques and Pam met and fell in love. They soon came back and settled in Eureka (northern CA.) where Pam had grown up. They began a Chocolate business that grew into a household name in their community. After years of building a thriving business, they realized that they needed to shift their attention to organic products. Being long time vegetarians (since 1970) and health conscious consumers themselves, they felt they needed their personal beliefs reflected in their business, thus the beginning of Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates. Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates creates a large variety of vegan products, including chocolate bars, gift boxes and Holiday treats. This means they contain no animal ingredients, such as milk, butter, eggs, and gelatin. The sugar that they use is non bone char. Check out their vegan selection HERE! So…much…nom. We are super excited to be doing a GIVEAWAY with Sjakk’s! By entering, you’ll have the chance to win a vegan Easter gift pack filled with $65 worth of super […]
