April Fool’s put a vegan in the White House

What would it mean to have a vegan in the White House? But not just in the White House, but what if that vegan were the head honcho, the President of the United States of America? I’m not talking about Ohio Congressman and the once Democratic Presidential hopeful, Dennis Kucinich, but rather, top runner Democratic Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama. This was an April Fool’s joke that didn’t fool very many people.…

Homeschooling and Vegetarian Parallels

Homeschooling and vegetarianism have several things in common. Individual and human rights is a fundamental element of both practices. In the case of homeschooling bill in California in which the wording essentially made homeschooling illegal for non certified teacher parents. Keep up with the latest in the case at The Home School Legal Defense Association: http://www.hslda.org Speaking of inequalities in regards to vegetarianism, first the animals that are slaughtered to…

Ice Cream?!

Today is the FARM-founded Meatout Celebration, the national day to convince everyone you know to kick the meat habit! I hope everyone can celebrate the joys of not eating meat with friends, loved ones, family members, companion animals and the world on this joyous day! Especially since it’s the first day of spring too! The best way to celebrate in my mind would be with some vegan ice cream, because,…

Green Dot: Happy Sign for Lacto-Vegetarians

On a recent trip to India, I was frustrated and thrilled about my food intakes. Traveling there, most foreigners avoid dairy products and any raw foods for fear of bacteria’s and falling seriously ill. That’s the frustrating part. The thrilling part is amazing! Most packaged food products  have little dots on them which identify the items as vegetarian or not. Some think the little green dot means VEGAN, but that’s…

Container Composting

The benefits of creating your own compost and the advantages it can bring to your garden are well worth the effort. As well as providing your plants with a wonderful rich source of nutrients it is a great way to recycle household waste. Recycling the organic waste of a household into compost allows us to return badly needed organic matter to the soil and in doing so we participate in…

If pigs could fly…

By Guest Blogger Annie Eagle  If pigs could fly… (after the year of the pig) In Vietnam there is a delicately sweet, street-speciality called ‘jambong’ (from the French for ham).  It is often served with sticky rice (xoi) or is deftly stuffed into cut baguettes alongside cheese or meat and slivers of cucumber.  I had eaten it myself a couple of times before I discovered what it was.  It looks…

Freebie and Sharing Links

Feb 26th, 2008  Today I tuned in onto the Opera Winfrey show in which the topic at hand was on freeganism. I would like to share with readers some of my favorite freebie and sharing websites. Upon reading the Veganism Vs. Freeganism post,I reflected on all of the no cost items that are available these days and that I have personally benefited from. Vegetarian Un-friendly World

Is it easy to follow a vegetarian diet anywhere in this world? A vegetarian/vegan faces a lot of issues in the real world. In India, there is no dearth for vegetarian food, but a small doubt lingers in one’s mind if there is no mix-up back in the kitchen. What if the food cooked has not come from the same balti (wok) that was used for cooking meat dishes? This…

Not so Vegan Friendly, the media

I cannot believe that calling someone a Vegan in the news is relevant to their story when it is regarding a marriage breakdown!  “The Vegan Perception”, as Canook phrased it is alive and well in the Media.    The article was about Sir Paul McCartney who is ready to offer estranged wife Heather Mills £30 million to “get her off my back” (reported on the 15th of Feb in Melbourne’s…

Veganism in the NFL

Veganism has made its NFL debut. Or at least that’s what the headlines are all shouting about. The tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs is a big, big boy. At 6-foot 5-inches and 247lbs, Tony Gonzalez eats several thousand calories a day to maintain his size, his strength and his competitive edge. For the majority of his career he has gorged himself on the standard football diet of steak,…

Animal Testing

The use of animals in research continues to be hidden behind thick concrete walls in laboratories designed to “control” every aspect of these animals’ lives.  There are no windows that allow light to penetrate these miserable, deplorable conditions.  No loving members of their family, peer group, species or other cohorts with whom to cuddle with and to seek consolation.  I dare say that not one person confronted with the visual presentation of the…

Behind the News

Far too often the media glosses over bigger issues in order to retain their unbiased standpoint. In an attempt to avoid making broad generalizations or looking at the implications of the stock standard news piece. In the New Scientist this week there was a brief piece looking at land use for crops and pastures. From this small snippet we learn that more than a third of the Earth not comprised…

BMJ article links vegetarians with intelligence

A new study, published in the British Medical Journal, suggests that people who choose the vegetarian path are smarter than their carnivorous counterparts.  What brilliant scientific support for all of us vegetarians and vegans out there! The study traced 8,000 people from birth and found that those who became vegetarian by 30 had an IQ five points above the average.  They also tended to be better educated and of higher…
