A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about one of my best friends who had passed (my vegan dog, Buddy). Now I want to introduce you to my vegan dog (Cassy) and her favorite vegan dog food recipe.
We adopted Cassy from a sanctuary in 2004. She was almost three years old. Cassy is a mix of white shepherd and (we think) bull terrier. When we adopted her, one of her ears was upright and the other one hung down…it was really cute. I adore my Cassy, but boy is she a handful! She is hands down the most reactive dog I have ever seen (and I worked at a sanctuary) or had the pleasure of sharing my life with. Her personal space is HUGE. Walking her is like playing Ms. Pac Man. I have to do 180’s to avoid things that she perceives as danger, such as cars, motorcycles (especially HARLEYS), skateboarders, bikers, skaters, joggers, anything that runs, other dogs and just about ANY other animal. She will get into hyper- arousal mode when things are half a mile away! Luckily she is very food motivated, so on our walks she sits nicely for me as I stuff her with treats while the “danger” passes.
At home, Cassy has a totally different personality. She is a complete lovebug. She loves, LOVES to cuddle. I’ve never had a dog who had to cuddle between me and my husband, in order to go to sleep. She even likes to spoon! Ha. We call her “Cassyroll” (instead of “Casserole”) because of the way she wraps herself up when she sleeps. She just loves to be hugged…I’m assuming because of her past. When we adopted her, her paperwork showed that she had been physically abused in the past…which I’m sure is part of the reason she is so reactive…so her transgressions are always excused. We adore her, and she wouldn’t be Cassy if she wasn’t…well…Cassy!
Cassy is now twelve and a half years old, and has been vegan almost ten years. She has been vegan since the day we adopted her. She also (like Buddy) had no problem transitioning to a vegan diet. She also gives her food (slurp, slurp) TWO PAWS UP! Here is her favorite recipe, and the most regular recipe that I feed my dogs:
CASSY’S FAVORITE DOG FOOD RECIPE
Ingredients:
6 cups of filtered water
3 ¾ cups of organic Indian basmati (white) rice
½ cup of organic red quinoa
16 oz. package of frozen organic mixed vegetables
¾ cup of nutritional yeast
½ cup ground flax seed
¾ cup of olive oil or sunflower oil
20 ounce package of organic firm tofu, crumbled
15 ounce can of organic black beans, drained
15 ounce can of organic garbanzo beans, drained
1 teaspoon salt
2 ½ tablespoons Vegedog supplement
Directions:
In a large soup pot bring water to a boil. Add rice and quinoa. Cover, reduce heat to low and cook until rice and quinoa are done (approximately 15 minutes). Turn off heat. Add frozen vegetables to the pot and cover again to let them steam a little bit. Let rest for ten minutes. Add additional ingredients and mix.
