California Votes For Happier Farm Animals

While it may not really change things until the year 2015 when it goes into effect (an eternity away for those animals who suffer), Prop 2 in California is a major step in working towards improving the lives of the most unhappy animals. Thanks to all of you who worked hard to get the proposition on the ballot. Thank you also to the big contributors, like Farm Sanctuary & The Humane Society,…

More on Obama and the Rights of Animals

Barack Obama is no veg*n, but it was interesting to see that he does have some compassion for the animals…  While speaking in Henderson, Nevada, Democrat Barack Obama says he won’t just be a president for the American people, but the animals too. “What about animal rights?” a woman shouted out during the candidate’s town hall meeting outside Las Vegas after he discussed issues that relate more to humans, like war, health…

Meat and Dairy Increase Risk for Prostate Cancer

Noticed this article on BBC today.  Eating meat and dairy products may increase the risk of prostate cancer, research suggests. Such a diet raises levels of a hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) which promotes cell growth. A University of Oxford team examined the results of 12 studies, featuring a total of nearly 9,000 men. They found men with high blood levels of IGF-1 were up to 40% more likely…

Ask the USDA for Vegetarian Options in Schools

Do you know that many vegetarian children cannot get lunch at school? At a time when American children need more vegetarian meals, the National School Lunch Program does not include any provision for plant-based foods. In order to change that, the U.S. Department of Agriculture needs to hear from you today. The Child Nutrition Act includes legislation for the National School Lunch Program, which provides federal assistance for school lunches.…

Sarah Palin’s Shocking Animal Cruelty

If Sarah Palin ran the United States like she has run Alaska, it would indeed be a terrible day for animals. GOP conventioneers were officially introduced to their vice presidential candidate who is, as Fred Thompson said, “the only nominee in the history of either party who knows how to properly field dress a moose.”But it’s not Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s personal love of hunting or appetite for moose venison…

Climate Change and Meat Consumption

Eat less meat to fight climate change: UN expert LONDON (AFP) – People should cut their consumption of meat to help combat climate change, a top United Nations expert told a British Sunday newspaper. Rajendra Pachauri, chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), told The Observer that people should start by having one meat-free day per week then cut back further. The 68-year-old Indian economist, who is…

Vegan Wonders at ExpoWest 2008

Last week we attended the country’s largest natural, organic, and healthy products trade show, the “Natural Products Expo West 2008” in Anaheim, CA. More than 52,000 retailers, manufacturers, and industry professionals attended. While products labeled “Organic” & “Gluten-free” were the rage, the words “Vegetarian” & “Vegan” seemed few and far between to me. Nor did I see the words “plant-based” at all, even though some friends had speculated to me…

If pigs could fly…

By Guest Blogger Annie Eagle  If pigs could fly… (after the year of the pig) In Vietnam there is a delicately sweet, street-speciality called ‘jambong’ (from the French for ham).  It is often served with sticky rice (xoi) or is deftly stuffed into cut baguettes alongside cheese or meat and slivers of cucumber.  I had eaten it myself a couple of times before I discovered what it was.  It looks…
