When I visited No Milk Today for a weekday lunch excursion, I came craving my personal plant-based comfort foods. The restaurant is best known as a cure for any vegan’s sweet tooth with their wide selection of baked goods made fresh each morning or available for party-sized customized order. However, I did not realize that their sin-free sweet taste also penetrates into their savory selections.
I happened to arrive when their rotating flavors daily flavors of salty and sweet tart selection were exactly to my taste. Their faux-eggy pumpkin walnut vegan quiche was served with a smile alongside a simple salad. This subtly sweet vegan baker’s delight left my palate primed for dessert.
I followed my meal with a double-chocolate. From the café’s satisfying selection of sweets, I chose their best-selling vegan cheesecake made on a chewy chocolate crust and topped with a crumbly cocoa layer. This decadent dessert “always sells out”, according to my cheery waitress. I accompanied my cake with No Milk Today’s specialty nutty hot chocolate – a warm beverage of creamy oat’s milk, rich chocolate, and melting peanut butter.
This is but one example of how No Milk Today’s array of vegan treats may make its plant-based patrons weak in the knees. Lucky for us, the café is dressed with an inviting array of cozy vintage-style armchairs to catch us when we fall from our sweet ecstasy. We can curl up all afternoon watching passerby’s from our wifi-accessible window seats.
No Milk Today is a happy balance between forward thinking and comforts of the past. Named after the 1960’s smash hit by the British boy band Herman’s Hermits, the café takes us back to an era of artful appreciation of cozy comfort foods. At the same time, the café is uniquely innovative in its magnificent menu of superbly sweet vegan creations. Bite into your sweet fill of vegan comforts next time you’re in this very vegan-friendly city to contribute your part to the café’s sweet vision of a better tomorrow.
