As for vegans in France.. the Cathars existed as far back as around the 11th-13th centuries.. They believed in and they were mostly vegetarian (some abstained more than others – much like Buddhism today). So France has always had a potentially vegetalien population at one time in its history (like Japan after the imperial edict in the 9th century (although I doubt that could have reached every part of Japan in that century – since not everyone spoke the same language)) – they were eventually wiped out by the Catholics…
