In 1990, Carol J Adams published a  ground-breaking work called The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory, which examined the connection between the commodification of animals and women. Carol’s book, now almost 25 years old, has opened the eyes of many writers and visual artists to the violent and sexualized way that women and animals are represented in popular consumer culture.

“I am honored, of course, that “The Art of the Animal: 14 Women Artists Explore The Sexual Politics of Meat” has been conceived and that 14 women whom I admire greatly are a part of this project. More importantly, I am excited to be a part of a project that at its heart is about artists and their art and how as artists they engage with theory, embodiment, and non-anthropocentric vision! I hope you will pre-order a copy and support this project!” – Carol Adams

Kathryn Eddy , Janell O’Rourke and L. A. Watson are editing a book in which 14 female artists from around the world explore the sexual politics of meat. It’s called The Art of the Animal, and they are delighted to report that Martin Rowe at Lantern Books aims to publish the book in May 2015.

The Art of the Animal is a visually stunning and intellectually stirring investigation of the female and animal body from a multitude of perspectives. Each artist reflects on her work, placing it within the context of their experiences as women, activists, and embodied beings. The artists include Nava Atlas, Sunaura Taylor, Hester Jones, Patricia Denys, Suzy Gonzalez, Maria Lux, Olaitan Callender-Scott, Renee Lauzon,Angela Singer, Lynn Mowson, Yvette Watt, L.A. Watson, Janell O’Rourke, and Kathryn. In addition, Dr. Keri Cronin, a leading cultural historian from Brock University, has written the foreword; Carol J. Adams herself has composed an afterword; and National Museum of Animals and Society founder and director, Carolyn Mullin has contributed an essay.

The Art of the Animal will accompany an exhibition opening at The National Museum of Animals and Society in Los Angeles, CA. in May of 2015, curated by Abbie Rogers, Janell, L.A., and Kathryn.

They need to raise 13,500 to make their book a reality. They already have a designer and have written the essays; the book is ready for production. All you need to do is buy your copy or copies in advance to make it happen.

They have lined up other exciting ways to invest in the book. You can share your latest project with Carol or Carolyn, talk about your artwork or curatorial venture with Kathryn, or discuss your writing with Martin. They also have amazing prints and artwork from the artists in the book.

When you order your book, you’re helping to support the work of women artists, independent publishers, and a more humane and compassionate vision of the world.

Thank you so much for taking a look and being a part of their campaign. If you want to help but are unable to buy a copy of the book, please share this page with all of your contacts. Let every animal lover and compassionate person know about their book. Thank you!
