Vege Creek: Vegan Soya-Mixed Meat Restaurant In Taipei

Vege Creek: Vegan Soya-Mixed Meat Restaurant In TaipeiHow can you miss soya-mixed meat if visiting Taiwan!

Soya-mixed meat is a unique snack food in Taiwan made using the method “滷” (Lu, a little like stew in brine, but somehow different). You can have many ingredients, with Asian flavored cooking liquor, which is special in Taiwan.

Although you could find many soya-mixed meat vendors in many places or night markets, most of them are meat dishes. Don’t get disappointed though—this article is going to introduce you to a veggie soya-mixed meat restaurant in Taipei, where you can go just by MRT (metro), and it’s a vegan one! (Many soya-meat or veggie materials in Taiwan contain egg or milk. So if you’re a vegan person please look out for that.)

There’s a marvelous vegan soya-mixed meat restaurant called Vege Creek in the Daan (大安) area in Taipei.

In Taiwan, most soya-mixed meat sellers are vendors, and usually veggie soya-mixed meat stores contain milk and egg, and are cooked in the same one pot, which is not very suitable for strict vegans. But Vege Creek is different. All ingredients, including the soup base, veggie meat and so on, ARE VEGAN!

Vege Creek is located in an alley on Yanji street (延吉街) in Daan. It’s low key—without a marked signboard. There is however, a white flag that is easily recognizable upon first glance.

The space is not large. There are about ten seats, and customers share one big table to eat at. However, the restaurant feels spacious with its simple and well-executed interior design. A beautiful gray colored concrete wall with a complimenting wood color—very chic!

On either side of the dining table there are shelve where you pick your ingredients: one side is for vegetables and the other side contains various other ingredients. I think this setup is great for managing crowds…much better than the traditional soya-mixed meat vendors.

Pick whatever you like, give it to the chef, and just wait for the finished dish to come. I really enjoy the wait. In Vege Creek, it feels like an elegant and relaxed supermarket shopping experience.

I visited Vege Creek right after the lunch rush, so there weren’t many vegetables left on the shelves.

The owners specially designed these shelves—just take a cup that contains your desired vegetable, and another one falls down automatically. Wow! Like a vending machine! The design is not only beautiful, but it’s also practical because it provides some space between the veggies and keeps them from being crushed.

Some of the vegetables here are direct from the owner’s grandmother! Organic farming instead of pesticides.

To select your noodles, you choose from one of the 5 colored wood blocks (each color represents a different kind of noodle). This is a really smart way to minimize space and not have to stack all the noodles.

How lucky! I arrived just in time for the business lunch discount! I have to say that this discount is really great: one noodle plus two kinds of vegetables and 3 condiments (A,B,C meal with mushrooms and veggie soya-mixed meat ingredients) only 99 NTD in total!

The normal price is pictured here—not so cheap (because we’re in the Taipei downtown Daan area). So the business lunch is a really great deal.

If you’ve been vegan a long time, you may find the soup a little salty, but it is still very nice. The best part is that every ingredient is made super flavorful by a yummy marinade, and you can taste every flavor.

And as always, I had to follow up with taking a picture with the owners, two of whom are handsome boys. They told me that their goal was for everybody to be able to enjoy nutritious and delicious vegetables.
