On an Instagram post in honour of World Ocean Day, we decided to ask the #HappyCowmunity to tell us the names of their FAVOURITE vegan fish and chips restaurants around the world.
That’s because we believe food should never come at such a cost to the planet. We also believe that a truly good chef can mimic the flavours and textures of seafood by getting creative with planet-friendly, plant-based ingredients.
Clearly, these 10 places are doing it right!
1. Unity Diner
East London, UK
Try the Tofish & Chips at this all-vegan non-profit diner and cocktail bar opened by vegan educator Earthling Ed. Besides the star of the menu, the Tofish and Chips, you also get burgers, hot dogs, vegan prawnz, salads, loaded fries, and much more.
2. Green Common
Central Singapore, Singapore
If you’re in Singapore, head over to this plant-based eatery & grocery concept store created by Green Monday. This customer’s review of the ‘Omni Golden Fish and Chips’ says it all: “Omni golden fillet, smash peas, fries, and tartare sauce. The sauce is sooooo good! It would have made a world of a difference without the sauce.”
3. Vegan Street
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
This note from the restaurant will make you want to be there RIGHT NOW! “Did you know that we make our no-fish fillets from scratch in house every day using whole-food ingredients? They are made with heart of palm and seaweed, then crusted in @cold_garden dandelion blonde beer batter and served with housemade tartare sauce 🍻👌🏼”
4. Vegan Restoran V
Tallinn, Estonia
Comment from the cowmunity: “Best vegan tofish I’ve had was at @veganrestoran in Tallinn, Estonia 🇪🇪”
This vegan restaurant has been around in Old Town since 2014, also serving a variety of fusion meals, smoothies, juices, and cakes.
5. Vish.Shop
Dublin, Ireland
This spot serves “vish & chips” made from plant-based ingredients such as cassava (a starchy root vegetable). Check out their extensive menu of vish as well as their burgers, cauliflower wings, and cakes!
6. Gino’s Fryer
Largs, Scotland, UK
Comment from the cowmunity: “Best Vish&Chips! Not only because of the vegan fish and chips, the vegan menu they have makes Gino’s the most integrated vegan chippy I’ve ever seen.”
Note: This is the only spot on this list that is not 100% vegan. However they have an extensive, separate vegan menu that was launched in November 2018. The menu includes vegan versions of fish, crab cakes, calamari, scampi, prawns, fish fingers, sausages, haggis, and much more.
7. The No Catch Co
Brighton, UK
Another fully vegan fish and chips restaurant created by Earthling Ed, this spot has a menu designed to authentically represent that of a traditional British fish and chip shop. Don’t miss the vegan cod & chips, smoked vegan haddock & chips, tofish burger & chips, and the tempura prawnz. Yum!
8. Sea Ranger
Ventura, California, USA
Comment from the cowmunity: “Sea Ranger in Ventura, CA. Just read on the HappyCow App that they went full vegan in January ‘22 so double yay 😍”
Make that a triple yay! Sea Rager offers mock meats like vegan fish and chips, shrimp, tuna, etc., not to mention tacos, sandwiches, patty melts, and burgers. All shakes, root beer, and coke floats are also vegan.
9. The Liffey
Stockholm, Sweden
If you’re in Stockholm and in the mood for vegan fish and chips, you’re in for a treat! This comment from the cowmunity has recommendations all around Stockholm: “@omnipollosflora, @theliffeystockholm and @the_old_brewer in Stockholm 🇸🇪 all serve great vegan fish and chips 🌱🐟”
Just note that The Liffey is an Irish pub that is not fully vegan, but has clearly marked vegan fish and chips and a vegan burger on the menu.
10. FGF Vegan
Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
Comment from the community: “@fgfveganoshawa near Toronto 🇨🇦! They use banana blossoms and serve their vegan fish & chips with mushy peas and tartar sauce!”
So, there you go – do not miss the faux fish n’ chips at this take-out restaurant! Besides this, they also provide a daily selection of vegan meals including sandwiches, salads, donuts, cupcakes, and smoothies.
