Berlin, Germany is home to not only the world’s largest vegan grocery store chain (Veganz), but also is home to the world’s first vegan avenue (Schivelbeiner Straße). With over 16 all-vegan restaurants springing up over just the past 2 years, Berlin has quickly become one of the world’s hot spots for vegans. Join HappyCow’s Ken Spector as he interviews Jan Bredack, the CEO and Founder of Veganz grocery store, and Thomas Reichel, the owner of Avesu vegan shoe store, and take a peak at Schivelbeiner Straße, where there’s an entire fully vegan block! In addition to Veganz Grocery Store and Avesu vegan shoe store, this avenue is home to DearGoods vegan clothing store, a Sunday vegan buffet brunch room, and to Goodies Cafe.

Now I do have to stand up for my city & say that I think Portland beat Berlin to the “vegan street” idea with our Vegan Mini-mall that includes at least 6 Vegan businesses on 1 block: Red & Black Cafe, New Moon Massage Therapy, Sweetpea Bakery & Cafe, Herbivore Clothing, Food Fight! Grocery & Scapegoat Tattoo.
I know that Seattle is also developing a Vegan hub with the Vegan Haven groceries & more shop, Wayward Cafe, Pizza Pi & now Araya’s Thai all together in the University District.
What other places have Vegan streets/districts like this?

August 18, 2013 at 8:38 am1 block being vegan is not the whole avenue!!! In fact on the same block there is a chain supermarket that is very far from vegan.
Having said that Veganz and Prenzlauer Berg (the area it’s in) is great for veggie and vegan food. The only cuurywurst imbiss (takeaway) I’ve found in Berlin that does veggie of vegan sausages is one block away outside of Schönhauser Allee Station. s
So come on over to Berlin and visit us some time.
